What Is An Air Purifier?

Air purifiers; there is a good chance that you have heard of them before. Despite the fact that you may have heard of air purifiers before, do you know what they are or what they do? A large number of individuals do not. Air purifiers can greatly benefit you and you family, but before the benefits can be felt, you must familiarize yourself with air purifiers, namely what they are and what they do.

Air purifier, also commonly referred to as air cleaner, are electronic devices. The goal of these electronic devices is to clean the air. This is done by eliminating harmful air contaminants. Air contaminant is another word that is used to describe air particles. No matter what they are called, they could be harmful to your health or to those who visit your home. That is why it is recommended that all homes have an air purifier in them. In fact, in addition to be recommended, some homeowners are actually urged to have an air purifier for their home.

If you are wondering why someone would be urged to have an air purifier in their home, you may be wondering who those individuals are and just who it is that is doing the urging. Well, the truth is that there are a fairly large number of individuals who are urged to have air purifiers. These individuals may be those who have pets or who have in-house smokers. It has been said, and actually proven in multiple studies, that pets and cigarette smoke causes unhealthy air particles to form. With an air purifier, those particles will either be completely eliminated or reduced.

In addition to those who have a house with pets or a cigarette smoker, it is also advised that those with allergies purchase an air purifier for their home. Air purifiers work to eliminate common dust particles, which is a common cause for allergies. As previously mentioned, air purifiers are also recommended for those with pets. In addition to keeping your home’s air clean, an air purifier may also help to reduce an allergic reaction to pets or pet hair.

Although it is important to know who can benefit from an air purifier, you may also be wondering exactly how they work. With air purifiers, you will find that different purifiers work in different ways. This is because many air purifiers are produced by different manufacturers. Each of those manufacturers is likely to develop their own product in their own way. Despite these differences, there are a number of different air purifiers that use ionizers and filters. These filters often filter out harmful air purifiers by preventing them to pass through the system. Essentially, this means that only safe, clean, and breathable air is allowed to pass through.

If you make the decision to purchase an air purifier or cleaner, and with all of the benefits there is a good chance that you will, you are advised to shop carefully. You will find that many air purifiers claim to be the best, but very few are. Although you may wish to purchase a low-cost air purifier, you are advised to be cautious when doing so. Many cheaper air purifiers are low-performing and the high-performing ones may need to have their filters replaced every few months. If this is the case, you will want to check the cost of replacement filters; in some cases the filters may end up costing more than the machine originally did.

How To Choose An Air Purifier

Today’s air purifier technology is so complex, most consumers do not know a thing about how it works and what to look for in an air purifier. I will explain some of the common terms you probably hear when buying an air purifier and what to look for.

MERV Rating

The MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) Rating is a standard used by most air purifier companies to measure the efficiency of their air purifiers. It is an industry standard among air purifier companies so you can safely use this rating to compare different brands of air purifiers.

The MERV rating is from 1 to 16. Generally speaking the higher the merv rating, the more efficient is the air purifier. Most air purifier manufacturers will indicate the MERV rating on the box itself. A rating between 6 to 12 is considered good and should meet your needs.

The CADR Level

The CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) Level is another industry standard used to measure the rate of delivered clean air. So how do the air purifier manufacturers measure the clean air delivery rate and arrive at the numbers? It is measured by measuring the processing air volume of the 3 most common contaminants in our atmosphere. They are smoke, dust and pollen.

For each contaminant, the higher the CADR level, the more efficient it is at processing the contaminant. So you should pick an air purifier with high CADR numbers for all three components.

Another factor that you should consider before purchasing an air purifier is the air filter. This is one of the items you will need to replace often and so you may want to check the prices of an replacement air filter.

There are also some retailers who sell generic air filters. They are generally cheaper than original air filters but quality wise may not be that good.

My recommendation would depend on whether you are considering to purchase a more expensive air purifier or a cheaper one. If you are going to purchase a better air purifier, then use original air filters as they are more reliable and will not damage your air purifier. On the other hand, using OEM air filters may not be a bad thing if you are purchasing a cheaper air purifier.

Hepa Home Air Filters - Discover How Air Cleaning Technology Makes …

HEPA filters are the way to tackle damaging indoor air pollution. Keep your family safe with a home air purifier.

When you think about air pollution, the last place you expect to come across it is in your family’s home. However, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollution could be two to five times higher - and some of the time more than a hundred times as high - than outside levels. That means below par indoor air quality is one of the top five risks to better health. Since we spend 90% of our time inside our homes, that’s a dilemma.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filters are one possible strategy for better indoor air quality. HEPA filters have been used since the 1950s when the US Atomic Energy Commission considered it important enough to remove tiny radioactive particulates from the air.

HEPA filters work along these lines: think about one sheet of HEPA paper (in fact it’s made of a paper-like fiber or polymer) with very tiny holes that filter out pollutants. In view of the fact that the surface area is restricted, only tiny amounts of air are able to pass through. If the size of the sheet was doubled, it would be possible to get 2 times the airflow and two times the filter life.

A larger surface area would make a more productive filter. So instead of increasing the dimensions of the sheet itself, the surface area is increased by being folded back and forth many times. Some filters have as much as forty sq feet of filter material. HEPA material is actually a rather incredibly thin bond of fibers.

Air is forced to go through this sophisticated network of fibers and in the process, particles hit the fibers and stick. HEPA filters naturally filter out the larger particles like dust, however they also work very well against mold spores, viruses and bacteria.

All types of air purifiers say that they clean 99.97% of the air that goes through the HEPA filter - but what they don’t disclose is that some air doesn’t flow through the filter. If the air doesn’t go through the HEPA filter then certainly it isn’t filtered. That makes the issue of 99.97% efficiency somewhat questionable.

The best quality HEPA filters don’t have a problem in this particular area because their designs include fans that in fact push air through the filter - the more air that flows through the filters, the better the air becomes.

The size of the room is an important matter when determining the size the air purifier needs to be. Evidently the bigger the room is, the larger the filter ought to be. A further possibility is to have two smaller filters. They can divide the work - and allow double the amount air to make it through the filter.

Remember that HEPA filters do not filter out chemicals, gasses and odors. That’s because these molecules are much too tiny compared to HEPA’s 0.3 micron holes. In order to filter out these destructive molecules, some type of substance is vital to absorb them - activated carbon is mostly used.

Take time to ask questions before deciding which air filter to purchase for your family’s health. Reputable business owners know about their brands and can best suggest which size of filter is necessary to guard your home and ensure it’s as healthy and clean as it can be.

The Benefits of an Air Purifier

Indoor air mold and how an air purifier works to help improve indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality is an increasing health concern. Pollutant levels (airborne particles, gases, chemicals, and volatile organic compounds) are actually higher inside the home than they are outside. Poor quality indoor air affects people to different degrees, depending on an individual’s age and relative health. There are different ways of protecting yourself and your loved ones against indoor air pollutants.

Indoor air mold

A most common indoor air pollutant is air mold. Mold exists wherever moisture and oxygen are present. Inside your home, molds can often be found in damp basements, closets, bathrooms, air conditioning systems, humidifiers, and any humid place. Here are some steps on how to improve the quality of air in your home.

Improving indoor air quality

  • The first step in improving indoor air quality is to attempt to control the source of the pollutant. If it stems from indoor air mold, smoke, or some type of chemical, you can actually remove it from your home through a thorough cleansing. On the other hand, some indoor air pollutants such as dust or pollen are not so easily eliminated.
  • The next step is to improve the ventilation in your home. Bringing fresh air into the house by opening windows is not only helpful but also very simple. However, opening a window on a high pollen-count day or in a smoggy city will probably worsen the air situation in your home.
  • Finally, you can purchase an air purifier. There are numerous types of air purifiers on the market–be sure to buy one that is well suited for the dimension of your home.

Types of air purifiers

Air purifiers are designed to clean and purify the air people breathe. They can reduce odors and airborne pollutants that contribute to poor air quality, and filter common allergens such as pollen, mold and dust. Cleaner air benefits everyone, especially those who suffer from allergies or asthma. Air purifiers can be conveniently portable or permanently installed.

Tips on choosing an air purifier

Area Coverage - Make sure the square footage recommended for the air purifier is close to or slightly greater than the square footage of the room where you intend to use it.

Air Changes Per Hour (ACH) - This number informs us how frequently the air purifier can exchange all the air in a given room in an hour. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you will want a higher ACH rating.

Filter Replacements - Filters have to be replaced on many types of air purifiers. Be sure to find out the cost of the filters and how often they must be changed.

Noise Level - Some air purifiers are very quiet, while others can be quite loud. Ask for a trial demonstration of the unit before purchasing it.

Energy Usage - Because air purifiers operate on energy and run continuously, the amount of energy they consume will be reflected on your energy bill.

Air Purifier

Want to breathe fresh and pure air? Air purifier is the best solution for this.

A clean and purified air is very much essential for maintaining good health. Breathing fresh, pure air is very pleasing and definitely improves the climate of your house or office. This can be achieved with the use of air purifier.

An air purifier is a device that makes the air free of viruses and microorganisms. Air purifier also removes off pollutants, allergens and dust from the air. They are useful in removing allergy triggering allergens like dust mites, mold spores, animal dander and pollens.

The filters present in the air purifiers capture the pollutants from the air, purifies them and re-emits fresh air, free of pollutants. These air purifiers remove or reduce the concentration of the allergens and therefore are very beneficial and useful for the people suffering from allergies, MCS and asthma.

With so many different types of air purifiers popping out the market, it’s difficult to choose a better one. Every Individual is different and so are his needs. And therefore, all the air purifiers are designed taking into consideration the needs of people. Some of the best types of air purifiers are given below.

HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) Air Purifiers

HEPA air purifiers are the most efficient type of air purifiers. The filters used in these purifiers are made up millions of small glass fibers from which the air has to pass. These fibers collect not only smaller particles but also larger particles from the air. They have the efficiency of removing about 99.97 % of the particles including viruses, bacteria and microorganisms.

HEPA filters were firstly developed by the Atomic Energy Commission at the time of Second World War but now used in commercial clean rooms. HEPA air purifiers must be arranged in such a way that no air bypasses the filter. The only disadvantage of this air purifier is that it has to be changed periodically.

Electrostatic Air Purifiers

Electrostatic Air Purifiers are used in houses to remove particles from the air. The filters present in electrostatic air purifiers contain electrostatic charge that attracts smallest dust particles from the air. These air purifiers work by applying electronic field across the filter, which attracts the charged particles.

Not only dust, electrostatic air purifiers are also capable of removing animal dander, pollens, flooring adhesive fumes, mold spores and paint fumes from the air. The advantage of this air purifier is that you need not have to change the filter but only clean it.

Ion Generator Air Purifiers

Ion generator air purifiers act in the same way as electrostatic air purifiers do. These purifiers have electrically charged surfaces that generate negatively charged ions. These generated ions are stuck to the particles present in air, which in turn are attracted to the electrically charged surfaces.

One of the disadvantages of this air purifier is that it works only in localized areas.

Carbon Air Purifiers

Carbon air purifiers are highly active chemically. The highly porous material present in the filters of carbon air purifiers reacts with small particles in the air by absorbing them. Along with the particles, these purifiers also remove some of the odors from the air.

The disadvantage of this type of air purifier is that they are not long lasting. The filters have to be changed frequently. Also, these air purifiers are incapable of removing larger particles.

Ozone Generator Air Purifiers

Ozone generator air purifiers work by producing a strong oxidant gas called ozone, which oxidizes many chemicals coming in its way. Therefore any of the particles coming in contact with ozone get oxidized.

As these purifiers change the particles chemically, they are used in many commercial applications. Breathing ozone is not at all good for health and therefore caution must be taken while buying such type of air purifiers.
